What's actually happening

MaleCNS is a published wiring diagram of a real fly's entire central nervous system — reconstructed from electron-microscope imaging, not a model of a fly. Every neuron in it, and every synapse between them, gets simulated as a real spiking unit in Brian2. Minecraft feeds that simulation real input — what it sees, hears, how hungry it is, how hot or cold the biome is — through the fly's own real sensory neurons, and reads its real motor neurons back out to decide which way to turn, when to jump, when to swing.

One honest caveat, since it's easy to overstate this: the network alone decides where to go and what matters to it — food, danger, curiosity, fatigue all come out of the simulation, not a script. Turning "go that way" into an actual sequence of Minecraft actions — walking to a tree, swinging a pickaxe, placing a bed — still runs on ordinary hand-written game code, the same as any Minecraft bot needs. That code never picks a goal or a destination on its own; it only carries out what the network already decided.
